Health and Safety Training

According to the Collective Agreement sections shown below, Occasional Teachers must complete the health and safety training by the deadline (second Friday of September) and work the minimum number of days (June 30) by the end of the school year. Thus, the Health and Safety pay will be issued with the July 15th pay. Please make note of this date and the requirements.


Article 24.07

All daily occasional teachers shall be paid up to one (1) day’s pay to complete health and safety training, deemed by the Board as mandatory, provided they work the minimum number of days as per Article 16.06. Training must be completed by the second Friday of the school year of September. Should training not be completed by this timeframe, the occasional teacher will be required to complete the training without pay and will be temporarily suspended from the daily occasional roster and Long Term Occasional List until the mandatory training has been completed. Upon returning from an approved Leave of Absence, the occasional teacher shall have thirty (30) days to complete the health and safety training deemed mandatory by the board. Provided the occasional teacher has worked the minimum number of days prorated as per Article 16.06 of the collective agreement and completed the training in the above mentioned time frame, the occasional teacher shall be paid up to one (1) day’s pay at the daily occasional rate. This payment will be received on the last pay of the school year.


Article 16.06

Within a school year, an Occasional Teacher must be offered, accept and complete thirty (30) instructional days (full or part) between September 1 and June 30 in order to remain on the Occasional Teachers' Roster and Long Term Occasional List, unless the Occasional Teacher has been on an approved leave of absence and providing the Occasional Teacher was not offered forty (40) instructional days (full or part) prior to the leave of absence. Should an Occasional Teacher no meet the requirement in 16.06, the Occasional Teacher will be notified in writing by July 30th that their name has been removed from the Roster and the Long Term Occasional List effective June 30 and will not be eligible for permanent or LTA work for the following school year.
